It's not just a women problem, this is for everyone.
The newsletter is slightly late this week, apologies! Although, I have a little work coming in, the week has just run away with me!
With the news focused, quite rightly, on the horrific murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa, I’ve been really thinking of how I can help my son to be a decent, respectful person. I hope he is already due to our parenting but you never know what might happen in teenage years, or when they get older. So we’re working on respect, consent (for small things like hugs and kisses and his own body autonomy), and how to treat people. It’s slowly working but he is only 5!
Social media is full of people who want to blame these women for being out and about, seemingly safe and yet they forget that someone has gone out of their way to harm someone else. It’s easier to blame the victim for getting killed than accept that bad people are everywhere in society.
Misogyny and sexism is still prevalent in society and especially online. Most men want to help their fellow humans in making women feel safe online and out in public. There’s loads of ideas floating on the internet of how to help, but my main one is:
CALL IT OUT - If you see anyone making sexist, hateful, racist, just all round toxic masculinity comments, please call them out. Just because they’re behind a keyboard does not mean they have any more power than you or me. Let’s work together to make society a little bit better.
Let’s work together to stamp out the awfulness that surrounds us.
Freelancer of the week!
Ok, this is a new feature, thanks to a great thread by Sally Fox on LinkedIn earlier today. She discussed who are our freelancer heroes and it sparked quite the debate! In a moment of madness, I decided to add in an award on this newsletter!
Unfortunately, there is no prize, but my readers are more than welcome to nominate their freelancer of the week to get them featured in the newsletter.
So drumroll please……this week’s freelancer hero is……Catherine Jones! She’s bloody amazing, going freelancing full-time and has recently launched a super-cool course helping new business owners sort their shit out and build their biz! She’s always made me feel really welcome and is so friendly, so go and check her out.
What else is new?
I should be running London Marathon this weekend, which I’ve discussed on various platforms the reasons why I’m not doing it, but I’m still a little bit sad. Good luck to all my wonderful running friends and family who will be running! Go and smash it, don’t be shit and enjoy running in London! I’ll be tracking as many people as possible so send me your bib numbers and I’ll add you.
Slightly fewer clients this week than planned, September has been a bit of a weird month so I’ve been working hard on marketing, networking and getting myself out there in front of brands and agencies. It’s slowly paying off, so to anyone who needs to hear this - DON’T GIVE UP! You can do this.
My son has given me a few of his duplicate Lego figures for my desk and now I’m surrounded by various Lego Ninjago, Marvel and Disney characters. I love the vibe and I’m going to buy more secretly and see if he notices.
As discussed in last week’s newsletter, I went to see McFly! It was a great night and my niece loved it (although she’s a lightweight and kept having to sit down!) and it was such a wonderful atmosphere. I couldn’t speak for most of Friday so I think the family were quite relieved!
